Global Cannabis Testing Market: Forecast to Expand to $12.37 Billion by 2035

10 / January / 2025

Growing legalization and advancements in technology have boosted the cannabis testing services sector globally

The global cannabis testing services market is booming. Estimated at US$2.15 billion in 2024, the value is expected to reach US$12.37 billion by 2035, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.26%. This growth is being driven by a number of factors, such as the increasing legalization of cannabis in several regions, increasing awareness about the safety and quality of the plant, as well as technological advancements in testing methodologies.

The information comes from the report "Cannabis Testing Services Market by Service, Sample Type, End User and Region", released on Tuesday (07), on ResearchAndMarkets.

Technological expansion and investments in testing

The increasing legalization of cannabis, both for medicinal and recreational purposes, has expanded the cannabis testing services market globally. Regions such as the United States and Canada are at the forefront of this trend, with 38 US states authorizing medicinal use and 24 states legalizing recreational use by April 2023.

The growing demand for accuracy in measuring THC and CBD levels has led to the development of more advanced testing technologies. For example, ACT Laboratories and SC Labs have joined forces to launch the “Trust in Testing Certification” program in 2023, standardizing cannabis testing in the US.

Spotlight segments

The potency testing segment was the largest revenue driver in 2024, focusing on measuring THC and CBD levels to ensure safety and compliance. Additionally, the cannabis flower segment leads in testing volume, especially in the medicinal and recreational markets, due to its widespread use.

The extracts segment, including oils and edibles, is expected to see the fastest growth during the period. These products are restricted to specific tests to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

North America, especially the US and Canada, is expected to maintain a larger share of the cannabis testing market, thanks to widespread legalization and the presence of laboratories. The Asia-Pacific region, with countries such as Thailand and Australia leading the way, promises the greatest growth, driven by the adoption of medicinal cannabis and investment in research.

Innovations in Brazil

In Brazil, several laboratories already offer cannabinoid tests to identify the compounds and quality of each product. At the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), researchers are developing a commercial kit capable of identifying the cannabinoids present in cannabis-based products and in the natural plant.

According to Professor Dr. André Valle de Bairros, faster, simpler and more accessible testing technologies are expected to become popular in the coming years, facilitating chemical analyses in various sectors.
